Key moments in SACTM history

1853
First Missionaries Arrive

Jesse Haven, Leonard I. Smith, and William H. Walker arrive in Cape Colony on April 19. First branch organized in Mowbray on August 16.

1978
Priesthood Revelation

Priesthood restriction lifted, allowing all worthy male members to hold the priesthood regardless of race.

1984
Cape Town Mission Created

South Africa Cape Town Mission organized on July 1st. Cape Town Stake organized on May 6th.

1985
Johannesburg Temple Dedicated

First temple in Africa dedicated, serving members throughout the continent.

2021
Cape Town Temple Announced

President Russell M. Nelson announces a temple to be built in Cape Town on April 4th.
